Firsts lose at Paultons
Having won the toss Trav’s decided to bat first. We lost both our opening bats in the 8th over with 13 runs on board. Abhijit (24) and Roshan (34) built a comeback with a partnership of 51 runs. Roshan scored quickly including a 6 which hit the side screen much to the frustration of their bowler. Once Roshan fell Abhijit followed quickly with a brief partnership of 11 with Shiv Choudhry (16). Derek (20) joined shiv in the centre for another brief partnership of 20 with both playing cautiously; score at this stage was 95 for 5 in the 27th over. Their opening bowlers came back on attack and from then on wickets fell quickly. Derek was the last man standing when we were bowled out with 115 on board. Failing to build partnerships and no individual contribution big enough to save the batting we were bowled out for our lowest score in the season so far.
Staring at a mammoth task of defending 115, Ian and Chris opened the bowling for us. Opponents lost their first wicket in the 8th over with both Ian (10(O)-6(M)-8(R)-0(W)) and Chris (10(O)-6(M)-16(R)-1(W)) bowling exceptionally well with Chris bowling all his 6 maidens in a row. Runs were difficult to come by, thanks to good bowling and some amazing fielding by Derek. His excellent contribution alone saved at least 15+ runs for us on the day. By the time of first bowling change opponents could score only 28 from 20 overs losing one wicket. As the bats were under no pressure of chasing a big score they took their time and played us well. When shiv took their 2nd wicket their No 4 bat walked in and showed us how it’s done with the bat. He (37*) along with No 2 bat (49) had a partnership of 61 before Matt bowled their No 2 bat. Bill, Matt, Shiv and Febin tried with all their might but the modest score of 115 proved very difficult to defend. The opponents eventually won the match in 36th over by 7 wickets.
