Final game defeat for 1s

Walking into the last game of the season on a bright sunny day Trav’s were
looking to end the season on a brighter note. The wicket was green and
mostly dry. Considering the league standings and promotion for 2’s the 1’s
were playing with a diluted team but not their spirit.

Batting first Trav’s opened with Ed Hardwicke and Febin George. We lost our
first wicket in the 3rd over with 4 runs on board; Febin (2) was caught at
gully. Wickets kept falling after this; Ed (2), Shiv Choudhary (1) and Bill
Stroud (0) were soon back in the stand and Trav’s were struggling at 13 for
4 after 8 overs. Nigel Keir joined Abhijit Jagadeesh at the center and the
two had a 53 run partnership. Abhijit (47) was then caught at long on;
score at this stage was 65 for 5 in 20 overs. Trav’s lost another quick 3
wickets after this. Nigel (18) was then joined by Naz Najib (3) at the
center for a brief partnership of 8 runs and trav’s were bowled out for 82
runs in 31 overs.

Chasing 83 to win Amesbury seemed to be in a hurry to finish game and head
to the pub. We had our first breakthrough in the second over when Matt
Brown took the wicket of their No 2 bat. This did not stop Amesbury from
scoring fast and at the end of 5 overs they were 45 for 1. Matt then got
another wicket but runs were still coming easily for Amesbury. Naz
contributed with a good spell and Bill took the 3rd wicket for Trav’s when
the score was 74 in 15 overs. Amesbury reached the target in 16th over with
7 wickets in hand.

This brings us to the end of 2017 season which was a mixture of emotions.
We have won matches in style and we have taken defeat with grace and came
back stronger. Though we did not end the last match of this season with the
result we wanted, I am sure all of us have grown a bit more as a cricketer
in the end. The 2’s got their promotion which is an amazing result for the
club. End of 2017 season only means the wait for 2018 has begun and till
then lets draw inspiration from Tennyson’s Ulysses ….

“We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find and not to yeild.”

See you all again in 2018…

Abhijit
