Sing When You’re Winning
On a bright and warm day Trav’s were at Whiteparish for their 3rd game of the season. The pitch looked dry with cracks and Trav’s lost the toss and were put in to bat first.
Contrary to the first two games, Trav’s batting started with a collapse of the top order; Shiv Choudhury (1), Dave Surridge (1) and Abhijit Jagadeesh (0) back in the hut with just 2 runs on board at the end of the 3rd over. Chris Hillier (3) tried to stabilise the innings with Ed Hardwicke before he was caught behind the wickets. Score at this stage was 20 for 4 from 10 overs. The battle for rebuilding the innings started from here. Derek Barnes joined Ed at the centre. The two batted cautiously yet maintained a steady run rate before Ed was caught in the deep for a well-made 42 (Captain leading from the front). The two put up a much-needed partnership of 53 runs. John Denham (9) and Bill Stroud (11) had their brief outing and back in hut with Trav’s at 133 for 8 from 39 overs. Recovering from a collapse the icing on the cake was from Matt Brown’s quick 20 runs, with cricket shots that would give any top order batsman a complex! Irfan Khan (6) finished the innings with a SIX on the last ball. Derek (41 Not out) playing a class innings took Trav’s to 164.
Trav’s started with Chris H and Irfan. Opponents had a steady start with their opening pair putting up a 42-run partnership in the first 12 overs. Shiv got Trav’s the much needed first wicket in 13th over. Opponent’s No 3 bat joined No 1 bat and continued the good momentum they had from a good start. They put up a partnership of 31 runs before Bill bowled their No 3 bat. Score at this stage was 73 for 2 from 26 overs. Then the spell from Bill and Chris Ashdown changed the momentum towards Trav’s. Bill finished with 9(O),1(M),18(R),4(W) and Chris A finished with 7(O),1(M),19(R),0(W). With Chris A bowling after 3 years this is a remarkable individual performance in a pressure situation. Bill as always; a legend! Needing 48 runs from the last 6 overs with 4 wickets in hands a nail biting finish was looking likely and so it happened. Matt, limping from a hamstring injury, continued bowling tight and took crucial wickets. What a champ! 11 runs needed to win from last over. Bowling our last over, Shiv was hit for a six on the second ball; 4 needed to win from 4 balls. Shiv kept his cool and came back in the best way possible when he bowled the same bat who hit him for a six ! He gave away only 2 runs in the last 4 balls and took Trav’s home with a 2 runs win! Whiteparish finished their innings on 162 for 9. This is the second time in 3 games that Shiv had to bowl the crucial and deciding last over and we won. Kudos to him!
All in all a very good team effort with an amazing win! Celebrations after the game was one of a kind in showers! Lots of singing! We intend to keep this going on. If interested you could join us “The singing in shower club”. The only requirement for joining is – your singing should be bad!
