1st XI Return to Winning Ways

With heavy rain during the week we turned up to a wet and muddy Amsbury wicket. With Travs winning the toss Batsman Captain decided to Bat (despite calls from some members of the team to bowl). With Trav’s falling dramatically to 21-5 after 17 overs this looked like a spicy decision! Our batsmen fell foul of the slow and low nature of the pitch with Febin & Ab falling to a pea rollers from short pitch bowling . It left Ed (49) and Chris (27) to steady the ship in an 82 run partnership with Ed the only batsmen finding any timing on the pitch. There was some late order hitting from Bill, Matt & Jack which meant we ended up on a respectable 131-9 off 45.

The bowling innings started off well with Matt picking up a wicket in thefirst over, all due to Bill shepherding the ball for 2 to Mid On. Lee came in from the other end and picked up his first 1st Xi wicket showing some good control throughout. We picked up the first 5 wickets quickly reducing Amsbury to 34-5. The wicket taking slowed down but as did the scoring rate with Bill and Chris keeping it tight for 10 or so overs. It was down to Shiv to come up and take the show bowling fast and straight, finally picking up his second 5’for of the season. We eventually bowled them out
for an even 100 with yet another straight yorker from the former skipper.

The fielding in general was excellent but the two catches from Ed were sublime. One, turning and running back and taking the catch as the ball fell over his head. The second running in and diving forward full length from mid wicket. The win takes us to 6th in the table, 7 teams have all lost 1 game so its tight at the top!
