So near and yet…

After a difficult week the first team had eleven players at home to Hythe
and Dibden 2s but only because we called off the second team game. We won
the toss and batted on an overcast day. Wickets fell steadily against
reasonable but not outstanding bowling. The only batsmen who reached double
figures were Abhijit with 46 and Shiv who was left 29 not out in a
disappointing total of 102. The highlight was a 6 from Abhijit which lost
the ball over the fence into the pond on the school site.

We needed something special to get us back into the game and this was
provided by Matt who took 4 early wickets, including a triple wicket
maiden. Matt finished with 5 for 10 but the rest of the bowling could not
match up and our opponents reached their target for the loss of 7 wickets.
There were some great catches, especially one by Neil, but a couple of
crucial, but tricky, chances, were missed during an eighth wicket stand of
41. Jordan impressed with the gloves on his first team debut but
unfortunately we could not compensate for the second team’s sacrifice with
a victory.
