Final game defeat for first team

The first team lost comfortably to a good Sparsholt team in the final game
of the season at Lordshill. We won the toss and fielded first, given that
we knew we would be down to 10 men after tea. Sparsholt batted steadily in
the first few overs and we were fearing a big total. However a sharp run
out by Abhijit got us going and wickets fell steadily: 3 each to Prath and
Shiv, 2 to Chris and one to Matt. Sparsholt needed a good last wicket stand
to reach 161 all out.

The pitch was playing well and we felt this was a gettable total. However
Sparsholt proved to have a very good attack and we were never in the game,
not helped by LBW decisions against 3 of our top 5. We were all out for 77
with only Abhijit and Prath reaching double figures. In the process Abhijit
passed 700 runs for the season, an outstanding achievement.

So the season ended in defeat but to win 11 games and finish 5th in a
competitive league is a sign of positive progress for the club. Let’s aim
for even better in 2019!
