Comfortable win for First Team

by Ian Burrows 0 Comments

After the last game was rained out everyone in the team were looking
forward to a good day of cricket. Travellers met Hyde at Lordshill on a
warm and sunny day. After having won the toss captain Ed Hardwicke elected
to bat first.

Travellers had a steady start with both Ed and Febin George laying a good
foundation. Ed was bowled on 45 ending the opening partnership of 100+
runs. After Jordan Payne’s brief stint at the centre Abhijit Jagadeesh (49)
joined Febin at the centre. Febin was bowled for a well-made 75. His first
fifty of the season! Shiv Chaudhary (72) and Abhijit continued from where
they had stopped against Whiteparish for another 50 + partnership before
Abhijit comically got out for obstructing the field. Shiv continued with
his good form to reach his second 50 of the season. Wickets tumbled a bit
after this and Travellers ended their innings with 295 on board. Perhaps 30
runs short but a formidable score.

Chasing 296 to win Hyde needed a good start, which they did not get. Losing
three quick wickets within the first 10 overs while chasing a big score
reduced their chances of a win to next to nothing. Hyde’s middle order put
up a good resistance but was not enough to win the game. They finally ended
their innings with 170 on board for 8 wickets. While Shiv took one wicket,
Ian Burrows and Matt Brown took two wickets each. Chris Hillier took three
for 21 from his 9 overs and proved to be the best in bowling for the day
for Travellers. There were good catches from Kev Allen and Jordan Payne
amongst a not so good fielding performance!

Playing Bournemouth next week. This will be interesting as its going to be
a clash between the top two teams on the points table! Stay tuned to find
out who emerges triumphant!

22 Players but no results!

On Friday evening at 7.30 I was feeling pleased that we were set for 2
games with full teams. Then I heard from Steve that Locks Heath could not
raise a team so the 2s were off. Ah well at least the forecast was not too
bad so the 1s should be Ok. Indeed soon after 1pm on Saturday we were
underway at Burley and by 2.15 were looking good on 70 for 2 off 17.
However the dark clouds which had been lurking were starting to produce
drizzle and before long we were off the field watching steady rain for over
an hour. Consequently the match was abandoned and after tea we headed for
the pub!
Better luck next week.

Record Breaking Win for First Team

by Ian Burrows 0 Comments

After a difficult week involving us being unable to field 2 teams the first
team had a convincing win over Whieparish.

We batted first and after the openers fell early useful contributions from
John Denham and Imad Nabi on debut paved the way for a 5th wicket stand of
163 between Shiv Choudhury and Abhijit Jagadeesh. Shiv made an impressive
50 but the star of the show was Abhijit who ended on 173*. So far as I know
this is a record score for the club. There were numerous big sixes and
powerful fours as Abhijit rode his luck, some hard catches went down, to
guide us to 286 for 4.

Chasing such a large total was always going to be tough for Whiteparish and
Matt Brown with 5 wickets for 2 runs soon destroyed any chance they may
have had. We used 8 bowlers in dismissing Whiteparish for 51. There were
wickets for Irfan Khan, Steve Noton and myself but perhaps the pick of the
bowlers after Matt was Prashant Sagar with 5 overs for 4 runs with a
dropped catch.

So a good start to the season. On to Burley next week with the seconds home
to Locks Heath 4ths.
